Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello is dead. Initial reports indicate that Arguello’s death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
Arguello compiled a professional record of 82-8 with 65 KOs during a career which began in 1968 and didn’t end until 1995! While he won titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight, Arguello is best remembered for his two classic – but ultimately unsuccessful – title fights at 140 pounds against Aaron Pryor in 1982 and 1983. Arguello’s biggest wins came against Ruben Olivares, Alfredo Escalera, Bazooka Limon, Bobby Chacon and Ray Mancini.
Arguello was a national hero in his native Nicaragua. He carried the country’s flag at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was the mayor of Managua, the nation’s capital city, at the time of his death
